Get [Out There!] and learn some real English! – a ground-breaking new course in London is quietly changing language travel.
Get [Out There! and learn some real English! – a ground-breaking new course in London is quietly changing language travel.
English [Out There!is a language school with a real difference. It opened with very little ceremony in central London last August.
The course is unique in that it carefully combines classroom tuition with educationally appropriate and interesting locations.
Students are taught new language then get to use it with native speakers, just minutes later. They are finding that this boosts confidence, motivates them and aids memory recall. One recent student, Natsu Amo, from Japan, commented on her feedback questionnaire,
"I think that the idea of going outside after learning grammar and vocabulary is perfect, because we can use them after the lessons. It's good to memorise them!"
The idea for the course came from [Out There! director Jason West, an English Language Teaching professional with some 10 years experience in the biggest language market in the world. He felt that it was crazy to ask language learners to come to the UK and then spend 100% of their time cooped up in a classroom, reading a course book and listening to cassettes, when the English speaking world was outside the door of the school. Jason explains,
"We get students to really interact with their environment in English. Initially they can find this daunting – but we give them a lot of support and once they have done a couple of lessons the boost their confidence and motivation receives is enormous."
The school is looking forward to the coming summer, when they expect to introduce many more students to their revolutionary method.
Not only is the course very different from others currently on the market, students can also enjoy it in ‘bite-sized' chunks, by booking just one or two lessons. They can do this because of the design of the course. Each lesson is a self-contained 3-hour unit. So customers can book one lesson or more and if they want a two-week course, they just book ten consecutive lessons.
This format negates the problems that many students complain of when coming to the UK to study for a couple of weeks. Conventional courses are usually based around a popular course book that has 12 units, one for each week of the course. Difficulties occur when students who have booked 2 weeks find out that their class is on Units 10 and 11. Not to mention the fact that they may even have used that very-same book in their own country, which is not uncommon. The [Out There!course effectively resolves all of these issues.
Aside from having developed the complex technical aspects of the course over the last year and a half, the school is now venturing into new markets.
Apart from the usual educational agents, global youth and student organizations such as STA Travel, will be selling the [Out There!course from this summer.
Other, even less likely, distribution channels are opening up for the school. Buzz, the low-cost carrier backed by Dutch flag-bearer KLM, are promoting English [Out There!on their foreign language websites (www.buzzaway.com). This is almost definitely a first for a language programme.
English [Out There! is a trademark. The student quoted has given her permission for her name and comments to be used.
